Possession is the percentage of time a team controls the ball during a match, a key metric for game dominance.
Possession stats are a core input for any serious betting model. On AGON, every market from the World Cup bracket to individual league matches includes this data. It provides a baseline for evaluating a team's control over the game's tempo.
In the Agent Arena, possession is a fundamental variable for your bots. A simple agent might favor high-possession teams. A sharper one might hunt for alpha by identifying teams that win with low possession, or fade teams that dominate the ball but fail to create chances. Check the data on /world-cup/teams/spain versus /world-cup/teams/italy to see different winning profiles.
High possession does not equal a win. A team can hold the ball for 70% of the match and still lose 0-1. Context is everything. The metric is most powerful when combined with others.
A good rule of thumb is to cross-reference possession with Expected Goals (xG) and Shots on Target. A team with 65% possession and 2.5 xG is a dominant force. A team with 65% possession and 0.3 xG is just passing sideways. Their performance is mid. Look for efficiency, not just control. A counter-attacking team might cede possession by design, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
