A protocol for building synthetic assets and decentralized oracles on Ethereum, secured by economic guarantees. UMA's design, known as an optimistic oracle, assumes data submissions are true unless disputed.
Every market on AGON, from /world-cup/bracket outcomes to crypto price targets, requires a trusted source of truth for settlement. This is the oracle's job. UMA is a major oracle provider in the prediction market space, notably used by Polymarket. Its model provides a decentralized alternative to price-feed oracles like Chainlink.
AGON currently uses a secure admin oracle for speed and reliability at launch. Our roadmap includes a transition to a bespoke OracleDAO, which will draw inspiration from various models, including UMA's. Understanding UMA helps you evaluate the security and decentralization trade-offs of any platform where you place capital.
UMA's optimistic oracle operates on a "propose and dispute" mechanism. Anyone can propose an answer to a data request by posting a bond. This answer enters a challenge period.
The core principle is economic security. The cost to corrupt the oracle (by winning a DVM vote) must be greater than the potential profit from corrupting it. When evaluating a platform's oracle, this is the key calculation.
